2012 Muskie Access-to-Justice Award Honoree

The first Hannaford customers bought their fruits and vegetables from a one-horse produce cart on the Portland, Maine waterfront starting in 1883. Today, the company has 181 stores in five states. More than 26,000 associates work on a full- or part-time basis in their stores, headquarters and distribution centers, and more than 750,000 Maine customers shop there each week.

As Maine’s largest private employer, with 56 stores statewide, Hannaford Supermarkets occupies a highly visible role in the local community. Its leaders, including Hannaford President Beth Newlands Campbell, have proactively used that visibility to make Maine a better place to live and raise a family and to assist our most vulnerable residents.

A key issue tackled by the company has been food insecurity among Maine families with very limited incomes. Hannaford is a founding member of the Good Shepherd Food Bank; the company annually donates tons of product to Good Shepherd and other food banks and partners with its customers in providing support to food banks and pantries through the Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger Campaign.

Last year, Hannaford also worked with Preble Street to access a special federal hunger relief fund that helped more than 12,000 of Maine's most-needy families. In addition, Hannaford has been a long-time participant in programs to generate funding and other support for local schools. Its legal team and many executives have also been active supporters of the legal services community in Maine, making their corporate expertise available to both legal aid boards and fundraising efforts.

All of these commitments have been fostered and strengthened by Campbell. A native of Pittsford, N.Y., Campbell graduated from Cornell University with a degree in business management and marketing. She began her career with the company more than 20 years ago as a Hannaford retail management trainee. She became its President in 2010.

In addition to supporting the company’s continued investment in services that benefit Maine families without financial resources, Campbell serves on the boards of Maine Medical Center, the Maine Early Learning Investment Group, The Foundation for Maine's Community Colleges and Riding to the Top Therapeutic Riding Center.

Campbell also is a member of the International Women’s Forum of Maine and Cornell University’s Undergraduate Business Program Advisory Council. She is a long-time board member of the Hannaford Charitable Foundation and has twice led United Way community campaigns that directly benefitted legal aid providers in the greater Portland area. She is a past board member of numerous civic organizations, including United Way, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine, Junior Achievement and the YMCA.
